Smartphone manufacturers are constantly looking for new ways to add powerful, smart features that allow everyone to take great photos and videos. From hardware breakthroughs in lens technology to highly advanced image processing algorithms - smartphone brands like OPPO are going all out to develop camera systems that can capture clear, high-quality, true-to-life images.
In addition to this commitment to technological excellence, OPPO has also conducted in-depth research into professional photography and works closely with renowned experts from around the world in portrait photography, lighting design and post-production. These influences are essential in our quest to create our own timeless photography aesthetic with the same standard as a professional camera.
This aesthetic takes on a new form with the latest additions to the OPPO Reno Series: the Reno10 5G and Reno10 Pro 5G. On the Reno10 Series, we have created a professional-level portrait photography experience for every aspect of the imaging chain, from image capture and processing to display. Thus, the Reno10 Series sets a new benchmark for OPPO in portrait photography.
A new standard for portrait photography on smartphone
While image processing algorithms have lowered the threshold for good smartphone photography, relying too much on them can also destroy much of the natural information in the image. In particular, the relationship between light and shadow blurs, reducing the 3D world formed by natural light on your smartphone to a flat 2D representation. Such photos may fit the contemporary aesthetic of smartphone photography, but they lack the kind of depth to faithfully capture the beauty of the real world.
With a team of more than 1,000 image specialists, OPPO spares no expense to develop technology that helps millions of users take timeless and beautiful photos with their smartphones. In addition to our own internal efforts, we also regularly collaborate with renowned photographers, lighting experts and post-production specialists to incorporate their insights and expertise on what defines good portrait photography into our products. Based on this, we have set our fundamental standard for excellent portrait photography on smartphones: professional-level images with crisp detail, natural colors and ultra-realistic light and shadow effects.
End-to-end upgrades for professional-level portrait photography
The new Reno10 Series introduces end-to-end upgrades for the entire image experience, from shooting to image processing and display.
As the first component in the image capture chain, the camera lens plays an important role in the final image quality. It forms the bridge between the camera sensor and the light captured from the outside world. On the Reno10 5G and Reno10 Pro 5G, OPPO has added an independent 2x telephoto portrait lens for the first time in Reno history to improve image clarity and quality at the base.
Behind this lens is a large 32MP 1/2.74-inch sensor that can capture more light with higher color sensitivity. The camera has a dual optical zoom with a focal length of 47mm, a large aperture of f/2.0 and a minimum focusing distance of only 25cm, providing more compositional freedom. By magnifying distant landscapes without enlarging the subject in the foreground, the viewer's attention is drawn to both the subject and background, merging them into one. When additional magnification is needed, the Reno10 Pro 5G also offers a good-quality five-times digital zoom thanks to OPPO's In-sensor Zoom Technology. In addition, the lens has a special coating to reduce color glare and lens flare.
Although the camera hardware already provides high-quality source material, image processing still plays an important role to ensure that the source information is captured and displayed in the best possible way.
The Reno series' well-known Portrait mode also returns to the Reno10 Pro 5G with some notable updates. Among other things, this mode introduces an updated bokeh effect that has been benchmarked against professional camera lenses to produce a very realistic level of bokeh and layering based on the lighting and objects in a scene. The aperture can be freely set between f/1.4 and f/16, so any portrait can be adjusted to get the right bokeh and depth-of-field effect. The updated portrait processing can also separate the subject from the background with greater precision. The accuracy of the AI algorithms was improved through special training for portrait shooting
As a final step, the screen is in many ways as important as all the previous steps. Without a high-quality screen to view photos on, all other improvements are in vain. That is why both the Reno10 and Reno10 Pro are equipped with a stunning 1 billion-color screen, which is a big leap from the traditional 16.7 million colors.
Professional masterpieces in everyone's hands
As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a professional and inclusive portrait photography experience on the Reno Series, we are also introducing the Portrait Expert Project along with the Reno10 Series. With this, we are calling on the expertise and insights of a global panel of professional portrait photographers to continuously optimize the underlying portrait technologies of the Reno Series.
Through improvements in subject recognition, protecting facial features and skin tones, optimization of face brightness, expert matching of light and shadow, and background optimization, OPPO gives Reno users the power to capture amazing portraits that combine a professional photographer's eye with their own style and preference.
Through the ongoing search for what makes a good photo a good photo and by constantly testing technologies against professional camera standards, OPPO continues to evolve its products to create the most professional camera experience on a smartphone. On the latest Reno10 Series, we have further narrowed the gap between smartphone cameras and high-end DSLRs with end-to-end enhancements that put professional masterpieces in everyone's hands.
